Applicants from other countries

If you do not live in Sweden when applying to Upper Secondary School, there are a number of factors that affect your possibilities of being admitted to an education programme. The Swedish Population Register is an important component of upper secondary school application.

About the Swedish Population register

Swedish upper secondary school is primarily directed towards pupils living in Sweden. The Swedish Population Register is the primary registration of Swedish citizens in Sweden. The population register is important in order to determine if a municipality can receive financial compensation from the government for a student. If you are not registered in the Swedish Population Register, you may thus have limited rights to be admitted to upper secondary school. Below is a list of different categories of applicants, and what applies to them. Applicants applying from another country who are Swedish citizens with an intent to move to Sweden should make sure register in the population register before the final admission. Applicants with final grades from Swedish compulsory school compete with these grades. Applicants with foreign grades have the possibility of being admitted via the independent quota.

NorDIC APplicants

Nordic applicants from Finland, Denmark, Norway or Iceland have a right to Upper Secondary School Education in Sweden. Nordic applicants are also exempt from the prerequisite of having a final grade in Swedish or Swedish as a Second Language in order to be admitted to national programs.

Expatriate Swedes

If you are a Swedish citizen living abroad you may be considered to have the status of Expatriate Swede if your legal guardians are living abroad and at least one of them is a Swedish citizen. According to the Swedish Education Act (2010: 800), an Expatriate Swede applies on the same conditions as residents of the municipality to which they are applying for education.

EU Citizens

For citizens of the European Union with an intent to register themselves in the Swedish Population Register. When you are registered in the population register you are applying on the same conditions as other residents of the municipality in which you are registered. Registration is done via the Swedish Tax Agency

For citizens the European Union who are not registered in the Swedish Population Register. You should contact the municipality or private school you wish to apply to, in order to find out what information they need from you and what possibilities of admission that exist. You can contact us in order to get contact details to municipal authorities.

Diplomats

For applicants that are not Swedish citizens and have a connection to an embassy in Sweden and wish to apply for Upper Secondary School. You should contact the municipality or private school you wish to apply to, in order to find out what information they need from you and what possibilities of admission that exist. You can contact us in order to get contact details to municipal authorities.

If you are currently enrolled in year 9 of compulsory school in Stockholm County, Håbo or Gnesta Municipalites, you will receive credentials via post.

Other Applicants

In order to study in Sweden you will need a residency permit. See the information from the Swedish Board of Migration about residency permits in Sweden.
